Not sure what to think of these. I'm rebuilding an MS270 (idk why) and bought new oem bearings and seals for it. Just got the parts out of the bag tonight and when I looked at the crank seals I kinda had that puzzled, confused feeling, like, wtf are these. The seals look like they're rubber outer edge and a paper like sealing material. Any of you guys used seals like this before? I'm half scared to put them in. A 270 is barely worth doing seals once, let alone twice if they would leak.

Top seals in pic are original, bottom ones are the new style replacements. Left seals are flipped over in second pic.

been awhile but those are one of the styles available, the other is similar to your original. IIRC the new style you have are about double the price of the original style. cant remember what the difference is, when it pops in my head i will chime back in.

Thanks for reply.
They came as a pair and were only around $10. Any idea as to the theory behind them? The material doesnt seem like it will seal well but I've been wrong before. And they're really tight on the crank. Probably lose a half horsepower with them lol

Those style seals have an integral shield supposed to keep debris away from the actual sealing surface. With that being said, those are the only kind of seals I have ever had trouble with. I would not use them. Just my .02

Those are weird looking. I like the idea of an additional dust seal so long as it seals the case properly. Don’t know what I would do in your situation

The odd looking seals are for clamshell saws.
They can be installed while the Cylinder is still installed.
The normal looking seals are for installation while the Cylinder/Bottom is split.

I attached the relevant part from the MS 231/251 manual.
Its just the same only different part no. for the seals.

For the MS200 use 9640 003 1190 its the part no. for the ols 020 AV seals they work just fine.

.
There are two different seal options for those saws. One is used if you are replacing the seals without separating the engine and one for if you do separate the engine. It looks like you were sold the ones that are used if you don't separate the engine. T.I. 24.96 and T.I. 39.90 describe it.

Big thank you gents for the info. Very much appreciated.

I'm tempted to reuse the old ones. They're still pliable and fit snug...farking clamshells.

Isn’t that same style seals as the husky 350?
Not even close. Husky 345/350 seals encase the whole outer bearing race, stihl clamshell seals are just a normal seal that sit beside the bearing.

I used it a dozen times.

bakelite ?

Yep. No one familiar with the 1190 seals would replace the bakelites with originals again..., including any Stihl shop worth 2 cents. 1190's are used in several applications including the 024, 026, 034, 036.....
