I keep going back to the idea of getting my current truck completely redone, it has a bit of rust at the bottoms of the doors, likely needs injectors, needs the flex plate and starter replaced at the same time so they actually mesh 100% of the time (don't ask about last mechanic), needs tires soon and the chrome is peeling off the wheels in a nice rusty razor sharp layer, just paid firestone to fix the heater that went out, still no heat, hood has a chip and slice in the paint (no idea how it happened), probably needs shocks and brakes I am well over 10K in fixin I am sure but that is small potatos I guess compared to a friggin 60K F150 and mine has less than 150K miles on it so far.
Anybody know a great and honest diesel/body/paint guy with some free time?

Yep, auto manufacturers are REALLY proud of their stuff....I'll probably NEVER be able to buy a brand new truck at the prices they are now...

I'd rather go older... Cheaper to buy, easier to maintain/repair, no emissions inspections.

My summer truck.

Nice truck! Love the 80's GM trucks. Had a K5 Blazer, loved it but it was a pile of neglect and abuse. Always been a GM guy.

The day in brought it home. 3 years old, 33k, and about 20k cheaper than new. My first diesel and unfortunately I actually use it so it's not so pretty any more. I lowered the front end back to stock since so my equalizer hitch would actually load evenly.

DefinitiveDave: Can't go wrong with a Ram Eco diesel, with 4 corner air-ride. Those engines can be "ported", make north of 440 hp with easy 650 tq while still maintaining their great mileage.... That's a easy 13 second truck to go with these fancy ported saws we all love...
I drove one of these last summer and they are incredible trucks. One thong they are not is inexpensive. In Canada that Eco-Diesel is $4500 more than a Hemi. Need to burn a whole lot of fossil fuel to pay for that. From the sounds of the mileage on Dave's current truck I wonder is a gasser isn't a better expenditure (I was going to say investment but let's serious...)

It's sad when I can buy a new decently optioned F-550 cheaper than a better optioned F-150... SMH If/When I sell my '02 F-350 CC/LB Dually it will be for a 5500 Ram or Superduty (With a Cummins Conversion). I like 7.3s and fixed 6.0s but HEUI injectors suck in the Winter and 6.4s are a money pit after 150k. I'd actually like to find a clean od 12 valve Cummins 4x4 or old IDI Ford 4x4 with manual transmissions for a work/pasture truck.

I know how hard it is to park a extended cab long box 2500 ram truck.... I get more walking exercises though... Sucks if it rains and truck is at the other end of the property....
I have a 2006 Mega Cab and I sure wish it was a long bed. I don't have any problem parking it.

I paid $37,500 for this truck in '06. It's a Cummins with a 6 spd. manual trans. It was also 0% financing and no payments for the first 6 months. It's got 93,000 miles on it now.

The Power Wagon cost me $100 cash and a day's labor...

with diesel and 87 regular being the same price around here right now it makes me ponder all the options, if there was a store where I could just drop off my current truck and come back in a month to a perfect rebuild I would be giddy, but no luck on finding the miracle store so far

I would love to get a new truck with full warranty but those stickers are sooooo high.
Maybe I will get a minivan :(

Cgraham1: that's a nice mega there!

Road Armour bumper?

I can park my truck easily but all depends on how tight these places have their parking lots.

I have a buddy about 30 mins away that does mega cab long box conversions for $6,000 cnd.

Very nice looking trucks....

This however, I like very much....

27 plus feet long, 600 hp, 6 spd manual....

Yep. About $6000 to do the longbed conversion, but no local shops that specialize in it. There's a couple in Utah, and one in Texas...

The bumper was built by a guy that lives in Northern Ca. that supposedly was one of the guys that started Road Armour. His shop was closed the last time I drove by there.

My truck is pretty much stock under the hood, with the exception of an S&B intake, and a Smarty. It's only set on Level 1 at the moment, due to the fact that the stock clutch won't hold at Level 3... :(

Dual disc clutch for street driving with spring hub and diaphragm pressure plate will fix all of that. They're way smoother than a single disc to hold 550 hp.
Which one? I've heard that some of the South Bend have issues...

cgraham1:  better not be my favorite South Bend 3250 DD... Best clutch I've ever had to hold back 400 big Belgian draft horse...

My first South Bend single disc was toasted in less than a year, 15,000 miles...

After the dual disc clutch is done, I'm installing a triple disc....

I've had 5 or 6 of them. The lever style with high plate loads like the 3850 or 4200 won't last long. The levers bend or snap. Had a 3850 last 27 k before the lever broke. Out a 3250 pressure plate in. Both held 625hp to the wheels. I just wouldn't sled pull the 3250 with that much HP. The diaphragm pressure plates are much smoother and driveable.

mdavlee: I've never heard of that happening before. The 4200 is the Iron Giant?

So the 3250 pressure plate actually fits other clutch models? Interesting.... Maybe have to use the 3250 with the triple disc...

I don't plan on doing anything else to the truck.... but I want to be able to turn the Smarty up without it slipping. I also want to keep the driveability as close to stock as possible, since my wife drives this truck, as well.

Dual discus much easier engagement that a big single disc. Peter from South bend clutch told me to slip it once when it's brand new to seat it. Much smoother after that. Got even better after the first sled pull too. It took a 4th gear launch from a red light to do it.

Yep 4200 was the iron giant. The pressure plates are all the same in the dual disc. The triple may be smaller. If I was going to sled pull a lot again I'd go triple disc now. They say they're even smoother.

So you guys think the 3250 with the upgraded hydraulics is the way to go? I just don't want it to be excessively noisy, or for driveability to suffer too much. I will probably set the Smarty to level 5 and leave it there.
