That would drive me crazy all day a short log out here is 16’ with a foot of trim take our alder some mills do camp run prices which is 17’ to 42’ all the same price, well some are tier pricing 17’ to 25’ is price group per top size, then 27’ to 33’ is another price and the last is 35’ to 42’ all steeping up in price with length let’s just say short lengths aren’t preferred out here.

The chip mill is the closest “mill” here: the closest Paper Mill or Saw mill is 1 1/2hr away.

I don’t have time for the last 2 yet.

I’m getting WC so I can haul to the chip
Mill.
$21.50/ ton short wood.
$23/ ton tree length.

That sounds bad, but remember I’m not logging: I just need somewhere to take the pulpwood/ chip wood.

We also have a local “WoodYard”, which is owned by a large Logging firm.
They pay $15/ ton, the same as in 1983. They resell to the above 3.

This option pays just enough to pay for your fuel & is where my logs are going until I get the WC squared away.

As you know, It takes a lot of $$ to start making a little $ fooling with trees.

When it’s wet and muddy I’d take a cat any day of the week over a skidder you’ll run out less plus have less ground pressure, that said it’s been years since we’ve ran either everyday of the week steady. One thing I do remember is during our wet season the skidder would be parked a lot more doing tree length thinning vs our high track skidder.

A high hip 6 with a swing Grapple is certainly the Stuff dreams are made of right now.

This is an 8 foot choker, had to use the block to get this log out...no problems at all even with the block hitting the butt first. Block was a little over a foot off the ground while pulling the log uphill.

Quick question why do you guys use chains as chokers? Why not a knob and bell? What’s the advantage over cable?

I think that kit came with his Winch.

Down here folks use wire rope & Knob/Bell configurations.

A 6 wasn’t ever made as a factory skidder like the 4,5, 517, and 527 were there’s a difference in the placement of the finals as well the bottom rollers.

Aren’t The 527 finals are closer to the center?

I thought I saw a few 6s out there with Young’s Swing Grapples that JJ shared in the Logging Pictures thread?

Is a 527 the more desirable size machine?

Those were conversion 6’s I’d bet they’re close to 65k in weight, a 527 is a big girl as well tipping the scales over 50k the old 5 is closer to a 517 with the 517 weighing in more, then the 4 like we have is the baby of the bunch a whole 94 horse but it can’t tear its self a part.

How you been? Still on 7 x 12’s?
Im good thanks. Finally this week I had more than 1 night off since last month. Have to go in for night tonight, possibly through the weekend then it'll be over. Had a small issue with a large clutch not getting oil restored to the bearings. Should be all back together now.

Hard to find a tree that straight for 35' around here that is large enough at the small end. Plus the mills usually want it bucked to length.

We normally get 2-3 22’ logs out of the SYP we take down.

Sometimes 4 depending on how long they’d been growing.

What do you do in regards to those activities?

My mill buys pulp wood up to 24’ as well. I just don’t bother with it because I have much better timber standing.

I am an engineer, my position is more like a field engineer "Component Specialist" to be exact. I helped them figure out the scope of disassembly then report to management the severity of damage and the scope of repair. In this case it was an easy call, send the damn thing back to the factory to refurb the shafts. One bearing reached 730F.

I have many hats. I get to dabble in heat exchanger thermal performance, rotating pumps and seals, machinery lubrication, equipment performance monitoring, vibration analysis and more.
