I was a weapons specialist in the military and after running 20 troops or so thru machine gun firing and other weapons qualifications we'd always send the freshest, most naive young E1 or E2 to find the brass magnet for policing up spent brass. Most of the time they'd fall for it...

That falls right in line with sending a 1st year apprentice for a wire stretcher.

Back 20 years ago while forming for some concrete sidewalks for a store front. We were a little short on a 2x12 so we sent the new guy to the lumber yard for a board stretcher. He was pissed when he got back cause they laughed at him said they didn't have anything like that there

I pick up a gold colored grade 8 bolt & claim to have found a brass magnet. It'll make people think about it for a second.

In printing it was either a paper stretcher, an envelope stretcher or half tone dots. Half tone dots.... when you read the newspaper half tone dots are the ink that makes photos.

Brass can be magnatized ,a company in town here did it once .They are working on a magnetic train now that uses very low emisions for use in the ports for moving shipping containers .

That levx link was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

There is some mind boggling technology out there.

My Dad told me the story of sending the new guy to the radar site to pick up another Fallopian tube. Each site told him they had just used their spare and sent him to the next site - he eventually ended up at the base hospital where a doctor informed him what a Fallopian tube was.
