I stumbled across this last week.
I found a good used one for my sister a few years ago and after shooting it, decided I wanted one as well.
It took a while but I finally found the right deal. The gun was filthy and you could barely tell the barrel was rifled. The guy had been trying to sell it for a while. I decided to take a chance, made him a low ball offer, hoping that there was a decent gun under the grime and he accepted it.
I spent four hours getting it clean. Three of that on the barrel. I soaked it with Kroil, to loosen things up and started scrubbing. First with a brass brush, chore boy and solvent, then with a lead removal cloth and finally with JB bore cleaning compound. I found a glass smooth bore, with no thread choke, under the crud. The single action is superb. I can live with the double action ( as these guns are designed to be shot) for now. The timing is spot on.

S&W 625-8 JM, in .45acp.
I forgot to take a before pic but here's what it looked like when I got finished.
I shot it this morning. It's capable of better accuracy than I am.
All in all, I'm very pleased. Used gun purchases don't always end well.
