Well Im wanting a new saw so I dont have to rebuild it in 6 months. While I do like the 346, the oe editions that i used way back in 2005 for thinning lasted about 6 months before needing new clutch, and piston ring, and sometimes a piston too. The newer strato saws with taller piston dont have so much piston rock, so it seems that skirt life is much longer.
I need to get out and make money, and wrenchen on saws aint maken me nothen lol. I would think about a NOS 346 though
I actually was going to pick up a like new 353 that had a scored p+c, and I was just going to swap out the jug with a 346 NE one. Didnt really have the time with tinkering with a blowen saw, and a new thinning job starting, I needed a saw right NOW. So 550 mk11 is what was on the shelf, ready to burn gas so thats what i ended up with.
Another sawyer for sandpoint ranger district is running a new 572xp, same issue with that saw, it looses about half of max rpm when smoke is encountered. And like my saw if you try running it too long in smoke, it resets the carb so as soon as the smoke clears you need to make 5 cuts to reset carb again
