Howdy gents, I'm rebuilding my first stihl(046) and had a couple questions. First I have all husky bars that are .058 and tons of loops that are all different lengths, is it possible to turn stihl bar stud shoulders down to accept the husky large mount bars? Next is how do you remove the oil pump piston? Right now I have the new bearings installed and case halves bolted back together, sorry no pictures yet. Any other constructive tips and hints are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Stihl bar works on a husqvarna (with an adapter), so I just figured that the husqvarna bar will work on the Stihl.

There's a tiny roll pin on the oiler that you need to drive out. Don't lose it.
I usually modify a small finish nail or brad to use as a punch

Mill the Husqvarna bar slots out to the right width to fit over the Stihl studs.

I had this done to two bars. Went to a small one man machine shop. He charged me ten bucks for two bars LOL. And yes it works, and yes the oiler holes line up (at least on mine).

Thanks for the help everybody. I drove the roll pin out and removed the control bolt but I can't get the bronze bushing out. It looks like a plug is driven in the other end. As far as the bar goes i think I will try turning the studs down rather than milling the bar, if it works I'll let everyone know. Thanks again.

If you have removed the control bolt then there's nothing holding in the brass plug other than friction. They can be super snug fitting. Grab a set of pliers and pull and twist. It should come out.

Thanks gunn, I've broken enough things in the past by using force that I wanted to know for sure before I started pulling too hard.

Nope, not until I've run it awhile anyhow. It sure won't win any beauty contests that's for sure.

Gotta say... The high-bid John did for Rodney is a very impressive saw.

The alignment of the oiler hole on the bar and the slot on the case that feeds it must be exact. I have even run into Stihl bars that do not align with the slots on the Stihl cases. Here's an example when an MS 290 case failed to align with a new Stihl bar:

This was an early MS 290 and it could not oil the chain on the bar. Stihl discovered the problem only after thousands were built and released. It happens.

Finally got her together tonight, complete with husky mount 24" total bar. I turned the bar studs down and needed to mill the adjuster gear down and deepen the slot. The only thing I need now is an oil cap and air filter cover. I kind of like it without the filter cover so I may not put one on it.

If it's your first Stihl as you mentioned. You started out with one of their very best. I'm a husky guy, but would take in a 046 without even thinking. Great saws.

Get a bar designed for your saw. Unless you have the proper equipment doing it by hand will never be good enough to mill the bar. Sell the Husqvarna bars you have that you don't need and get the correct bars.
