Maybe the heavy one is a 12 mm 044, and the crank and rod on the 10 mm saws are lighter. That would add up fast.

I think the 12 mm crank is larger, and the rod is larger on both ends.

I have remnants of a very early 10mm saw in my 1128 junk box. Quite literally, everything is slightly thinner, lighter, etc. The recoil is thinner casting and is held on with 4mm fasteners. Crankcase is thinner material and the jug bolts are 5mm. Top cover bolts are 4mm and exhaust bolts are 5mm vs 6mm on the newer 044/440. The muffler casing is as thin as a husky muffler. The crank shaft is thinner on the weights and the rod is pretty spindly. The HD filter cover has no wings on the original covers and as mentioned the tanks have less molded braces and are a thinner plastic. The differences are on par with most of the models from that era compared with the later versions. An early 064 is very noticeably lighter than a late model one. An 034 is lighter than a later plastic tag 034 for all the same reasons. Most/all parts interchange but few are actually identical. The earliest models are the lightest and I'm guessing as they discovered weak areas they updated them and consequently gained some weight.

Great post...

I've noted the same details.

Thanks for the info. I would think the major differences in weight would be related to changes in the crank and rod, as most of the other stuff really does not weigh that much, but I'm sure that several changes can add up.

THIS JUST IN - THE 441-C IS BACK!!!

Just saw one at the local dealer's, and it is different! Two clips hold the cover for the air filter. I think it is lighter, but did not have a scale available. They promised to keep a dry powerhead so I can weight it on my postal scale.

Can't do it now, but I will let you know when I can.

It all ad's up... a Lil here and a Lil there, next thing you know you shaved 1/2 lb off a saw....I remember reading on this site last winter a member.... ( hint @MustangMike ) .... left the cooling plate between his muffler and cylinder off his ms440, because he said he noticed a difference in the balance.... weight savings.....cough.... ;)

I believe this one is different, but the 441 I had was not a C model, the shop also stated it was different (maybe they know???)

The clutch cover did not look like the funky new ones.

I will try to get there soon with my postal scale, but I've been very busy lately.

I guess it is the same saw as before, it certainly did not loose any weight. They told me it is the same price as the 461 ($9** w/25" B&C).

I don't understand how they are making a 70 cc saw that will be heavier than the 462??? Makes no sense to me.

Doesn't look much different than the previous 441.......I missing something? Maybe I can convince the boss to order one for us to sell. I wouldn't mind seeing the changes....is the dang thing still a strato?

I'll bet you a 6 pack of your favourite beer there is not one change to this saw. My guess is Stihl has a bunch of these in warehouses around the world and needs to move some before the 462 can be released widely. If anything it has been detuned a little to make it fall within EPA specs. Or having held it off the market half the year their EPA score with the new models is good enough that they can sell it again.

Please remember in the rest of the world this saw never stopped being available...
