Hey guys I have been picking up more and more tree jobs on the side....my big saw is the ms461....the biggest bar I have is a 25" and it has suited my needs just fine....I just want to have the biggest bar that my 461 will pull in hardwood on hand....I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it LOL...

I just have a few questions....

1---will the standard ms461 oil a 32" bar sufficiently in hardwood???

2---with sufficient oil, will the 461 pull the 32" in hardwood ok???

3---should I go to .63 gauge on bars 28"--32"...

I greatly appreciate your guys advice, I know some of you guys have have ran all kinds of different bar and chain combinations on the 461, so I really value all of your opinions!!!!

I run a 28" full chisel and it pulls really well. Obviously, chain condition has a lot to do with this as well.

I've been thinking of getting the 32" with a skip chain for the same reason as you. At some point, I just might need it.

Get a 32 inch bar and a skip chain. Your saw will pull it nicely in heavy cuts on hardwood also skip chain doesn't get bound up with chip near as easy as a full chiz chain
Hey thanks for reply...

Does the 32" bar get enough oil???

What gauge do you run .50 or .63????

Ya I have already had many instances were I could have used a 32"....I would just like to have it close when needed....

Do you use .50 or .63 gauge on your 28"...

All my 3/8 chain 26" and under is .50.....

I hear people say the .63 helps carry oil....They also have to be heavier than .50....of course it's all a compromise I guess...

I have the 50.

I'm not sure if wider is better for carrying oil. If the channel is wider, but the oil pump is still putting out the same volume, wouldn't it fill the channel less? I don't claim to know much when it comes to this interaction. I haven't spent more than this 30 seconds thinking about it.

I think both are approved on Stihl's website for this saw, so that's good enough for me. If I can get a 32" 50 gauge, I will, so it is the same as all my other bars.

do you seem to get plenty of oil on your 28" bar....

Seen a few places were an Oregon power match 32" .50 gauge for $74...

The first couple times I cut with it, I kept watching it. It seems to do well. I haven't had issues burning up a chain yet. But I just cut firewood on occasion and this is one of 4 saws I use. So I'm not running this all the time. Take it for what it's worth (which may not be much).

It's nice.

Hopefully the oiler on a 461 is better than previous models.

I run my 460 with a 36 inch bar and skip tooth and that saw pulls that bar in hard wood with ease. No problems oiling it either. Also have a 460 with a 32 inch and it pulls that just fine as well. The 461 will have no problems at all.
Hey man thanks a lot...I just order a 32 and a skip chain!!!

Do you like the skip chains better than full comp on the 460/461??

I've heard it's easy to modify the pumps but I haven't tried
