I had good luck with the carbs in the 660 kits, but very bad luck with the ones in the 440 kits (which are the same as 460 carbs). (only one of my 660 carbs gave me a problem, and adjusting the fuel lever solved it).

But, every batch may be different!

Thanks (and MustangMike too). The wrist pin lengths are the same.

Think I will order a Hyway cylinder.

What are your thoughts on the “big bore 54mm” for the 046/ms460 saw?
You don't really need a big bore the ms460s are strong runners from the get go.

The big bore kits may work on the 440s, but I have never heard of a 460 big bore doing that well.

I would stick with the standard bore, a 460 can be made to run very strong.

First attempt to start resulted in my hand being hurt repeatedly.

I think I’ll have to drill the decomp bleed port larger.

I did that on the MS880 I rebuilt.

The screwdriver keeps the button depressed so I can get two revolutions. [emoji90]

Almost sounds like you may have some hydraulic lock in the case. Or, sometimes the crank is just a bit stiff to turn at first.

Did you knock it back and forth with a hammer to loosen it up?

Spins freely with the spark plug removed.

I need to check the flywheel nut. I may have inadvertently advanced the flywheel by pulling on it with a loose nut. [emoji848]

I have a .045” drill bit to open up the decomp bleed port.

I had to go a full 1/16” on the 880.

Existing hole is .030” diameter.

.047” drill bit is the best I have short of .062”.

The flywheel/key/nut are positioned correctly and tight.[emoji108]

Might be worthwhile to try retarding the timing a bit.
These saws are subject to reverse engineering flaws as well as tolerance stacking of crank, flywheel, and coil.
Who knows where they actually land in relation to OEM saws.

I have had 2 or 3 that were very tough to pull over at first, then rapidly loosened up. One of the 660s with 105 exhaust was nuts to try to pull over while there was still some oil from building in the cylinder.

Yea and I think that's part of him having trouble getting it going it's probably got a good amount of oil in it so it's going to be a tuff bugger to pole over until it gets enough fuel in there to thin the oil down then he should be fine.

Well, the compression release don’t help much when you are a 130# geezer with tiny hands. [emoji1787]

I think I’ll try the Farmertec release with its huge (.072” diameter) bleed port. [emoji848]

I use the Farmertec ones, just remove that plastic cap and glue it down with Loctite PL Premium. (lightly sand the metal to scuff it a bit, then dampen it with a wet Q Tip).

Got it to run five/eight seconds. Used a release with two .072” bleed holes holding it open with my index finger.

I conclude the spark is severely advanced.

Investigate moving the coil a bit CCW by elongating the mounting holes.[emoji848]

I received my ms460 kit. Cylinder plating looks good. Have a lot of flashing to clean up, not happy with deposits in ports. Carb looks bad. Thottle plate won’t close. May go with a hyway cylinder. Cases need some clean up and paint missing and very crap around flywheel

Going on the can’t start thing, I can wholeheartedly agree, after building a saw [660] with a lot of oil.. it made much digits hurt real bad. Till I took the plug out and thrashed it over many times to rid the oil. Then put a hot plug in and one hard pull it ran.

Cheers

That is a good thought … good to see one of us (and it was not me) has their thinking cap on!

That is almost as good as when my chain stuck, so I removed the B+C before checking if the brake was on!!!!

I think it will be a long time before I make that mistake again!

The first ms 660 I built I pulled and pulled my arm off. I thought at the time why did I build such a large displacement saw. It’s been three years since that. I had it out Friday in some 28 inch wood. It went trough like butter. Big smile on my face. Worked again flawlessly. My friend ran his johnsred that I rebuilt for him with som modifications big smile on his face. I spent most of the day porting that cylinder for ms460. Hyway is out of stock on them.
