I've got a 20" Stihl ES bar that I'm thinking of modifying for use with 3/8 9pin and 10pin sprockets. I know the tail of the bar needs to be cut.
My problem is that I don't have the sprockets yet.
Can anyone tell me the diameter of the sprockets or maybe even tell me how much of the bar tail I need to remove?

If you're only running a 9, rumor has it (my limited experience as well) that you don't need to. I did have a chain derail on the 394, but it was from having the sprocket flipped the wrong way (the groove isn't in the center like on 7 and 8's). Once I flipped it, it's fine.

The 10 pin, as I understand it, is a different story

Having the diameter of the 9pin would be great.
Thanks

Does anyone have a 10pin they could measure?

Anyone got a picture or two, maybe a before and after shot of a modified bar tail?

I think I know what I need to do. I just want to be sure before I do any cutting or grinding.

All is done is the smaller end of it is chopped off or ground down so the chain doesn't span very far before it reaches the bar groove. You'll end up a few drivers too many if the larger sprocket doesn't compensate. You'll need to lengthen the bar stud slot and relocate oiler and adjuster holes. Just make sure you don't remove enough tail to leave an edge for the chain to catch on.
Here's an after pic of a regular Stihl mount for the saws up to 660, where i have it set up to ride about 1/8" away from a 3/8 9-pin sprocket.IMG_20160813_151619.jpg

Sorry Mike. I went out to the garage and got sidetracked for 14 hours and never did measure the dang thing
No worries. I took a chance and did the mods. As far as I can tell it looks like it should work. I'll hopefully find out Saturday
