May I pick your collective brains about the 394 cylinder?

So a 066 is in between a 385/390 and a 394/395 then? Stronger than 390's but not as strong as a 394's?

Yep.
A 394 is heavier than a 385/90 but has so much more power.
I don't know how much heavier but it don't feel like much.

I built one a couple months ago but have not had time to put it in wood yet... Has been heat cycled twice and tuned by ear.....

Mine would probably get close to 250 but I can't keep a starter together long enough to get there. How did you do it?

You converting to the 395 cylinder Deets?? Or did you score an OEM 394 cylinder?

Edit: Wait a sec, that IS a 394 cylinder isn't it!!! Either you did a stellar job cleaning it, or you scored!
Both.... I put it in the bead blaster to clean. But the jug is flawless, it's one of the nicest bores I've seen on a used cylinder

Me and deeter are both hardcore stihl guys but even we have to have a 94.

I love my beloved red light 066 but try as I may I can't make it run like the 94,not even close really. :(
There is no substitute for cubic inches!!!! and lotz of them!!! can you say,,,,, Major grunt!!!

For sure, 36" on mine... probably won't ever have less.... Haven't needed that much bar is why it hasn't had a workout yet...
It starts easy in a pull or two WITH the decomp....

A 394 is the same design as a stihl, basically identical to a 660 for instance only with much better timing numbers.

I take 050 from the chamber and use
103 120 78 and usually 230 or 240 lbs of compression.

You don't have to take that much from the chamber but these big huskys love compression.

I run a little more ex timing (101) than that but the trans and intake are the same. I only take 0.030" - 0.040" out of the squish which drops it around 205-215 lbs compression.

I've made some really great 066's before that will run close to a 394. The key is getting the ex timing down as far as you can.

394

vs. 066

My 066 was 103 120 78 but I've since raised to 101 and it gained from it,it's always been close to my 394 but close is it.
