I see it daily also. They hire folks at our mill starting out at 21.00$ hr and spend months and 1000s training them then they quit in the 1st week if not the 1st day of work

Boy, you'd think they'd only want to do that a couple of times. Turnover is such a huge waste. I bet they'd really like to figure out a way to weed out the turds before making that kind of investment. I suppose just increasing the starting wage might help with retention, but $21 is pretty reasonable for a starting wage.

This ain't a popular statement, but I've noticed it to be true. People are lazy. After a couple of generations of participation ribbons and safe places we are seeing a whole generation of people that can't tolerate cold, heat, blisters, chewed asses, etc, etc.

This world is a tough place, and protecting our kids from it's gritty side ain't doing them any favors.

Lazy kids run when they see work and shift work and offshore hands run back to their previous jobs once a layoff is over

I used to work between 5 and 15 men all the time. I would never consider getting back into construction now though.

I had a guy a few years back that kept coming to me complaining about the other men picking on him. I asked if he knew why they picked on him....

    He didn't have a clue.

My dad is a retired US Army Master Sergeant. We ran the family farm by ourselves for several years. The only time he hired help was when we would set the tobacco in the field. He had a harvester, so we would barn the tobacco by ourselves too, just he and I. When we left the farm (long story) I went to work in construction. Still there welding after 21 years and I am content with it. It seems easy compared to what I was doing as a kid. I have often said people should spend a year or so working on a farm in their youth. There would be a whole new perspective on what work is and how it is done.

Yep. There it is. Hard work builds character. We think we are helping our kids by providing a "better" life for them than we had.......but we are only hurting them.
