I am looking to buy a chainsaw mill. I was looking at the Granberg Alaskan IV.
Now I see these new mills.
Which one or type should I get for milling slabs?
Pros and cons of each.

The Alaska brand is about as good as you'd want unless an alternate option is also made of aluminum with a guide handle. I bought one of those blue ones called the panther mill from the guy down in Florida. It was about half the price as the Alaska, but made of heavy steel, and with no guide handle.

OK. Thanks Jim. I was seeing a lot of hullabaloo regarding the newer style mills. Small with what looked like angle iron guide.
The Alaskan is more proven I think.

Has anyone tried the Chinese ones listed here? I want one myself and was curious.

Thanks Jon.

I use that one for making boards, I use a Logisol Timberjig to get the first flat side on a log, and I have a Beam Machine for making beams.

All good for different things, and portable, they go to the log. No need for large equipment.

Hey Jeff,

Don't buy a logosol

I have one and it is a total pain in the ass to set up ...instructions say use 1x6 planed boards to make the guide if you don't buy the expensive rails.
Not a good outcome for me
I never use it because it is so hard to get right and takes a long time.

Got a 63" Alaskan, works great, simple, easy, makes good slabs, can change rails to make different sizes but mainly using a 36", used with in 088, 661, 261 with 18" all with original size rails

I have been using a 2X8 screwed to a piece of treated 5/4 decking with good results (8'). Can use the shelf on either side.

I don't know why the site will not let me post pics I previously posted. Getting a file too large message.

Some pics of the Norwood mill that was at Rodney's gtg. I believe it was Kris's.

Definitely the slickest chainsaw mill I've seen!!
