Hi folks
I have a little Stihl 192 climbing saw here that belongs to a tree service bloke.

He has asked me to give it more power.

I have opened up the baffle some and the muffler outlet to help it breathe better

Are there any other worthwile gains to be had with these little saws?

Brewz- I open up the muffler outlet as well as modify the deflector on these and it makes a difference. Also trim off the carb limiters.

The 'T' (not TC) version has higher compression so it should run well if everything else is good.

Only difference I know of is easy start on the c model.

The TC (ergo start/ez start) version has a pre-exhaust groove in the cylinder, but the older T cylinder does not. Compression on a TC is usually around 125, and on a T I've seen it at 160-170. Piston is the same, and cylinders are interchangeable.

Very interesting. I would have never guessed a cylinder difference.

Mine is a TC and it rips pretty good with .020 advance, muffler mod and limiters trimmed. It felt better/stronger than the 338xpt I had at the same and ended up selling to a buddy since I liked the Stihl better.

Granted, I've never run a 201t or 200t and it's running a 12" bar.

I have a 14" .050 light bar on my 192t. It pulls that setup good with a muffler mod, and advanced timing. Not near as strong as a ported 200 but it's still good enough.

Does it melt bits out of the chain cover with that slot in the deflector?

Mines stayed pretty solid. I'm not a climber and don't use it a ton though either. IMG_4291.JPG

The clutch cover is eventually going to get black and slightly melted either way, but it really starts to melt when the muffler comes loose. And it will come loose unless you check it often and use red Loctite on the two screws.

I wonder if the groove effects running compression at all???

I gave it the muffler mod last night, opening up the baffle a bit, completely removing the metal under the screen and opening up the outlet on the deflector plate.
I didn't want to take the deflector plate too far and end up melting the side off the chain cover.

The carb came off and got US cleaned.
Ground off the H screw limiter as it did nothing with the limiter in place.

Will advance the timing this arvo when I get home from work and see how it goes once tuned.

Brewz- some other things to check besides the muffler screws: Check the ignition screws- they come loose quite often and then well.... Also check the 4 screws holding the engine into the plastic case. When they come loose it will break a mounting ear off the cylinder.

Seems to me that it would. It's letting gasses escape past the piston after the exhaust port is closed off.

Yeah. But how much. It's moving so fast at cutting speed, I wonder if on high compression saws it could help starting with out compromising performance???
