There’s a difference between the trigger and the backcut.
Backcut in question is level, however higher than the notch.
Technically correct however, I never liked using an angle cut to cut the trigger. Only takes one tree to release before you've completed that type of cut or some material to stay with the log and take your saw for a ride. I prefer to come in flat and at the same plane as the bore, or slightly below.

I thought with those types of triggers you were supposed to come at an upward angle? To prevent pinch. Verses the downward type trigger.

the way I do it has worked for me for over 30 years someone will it's wrong but you get that
the trigger as you say is the first cut I make then the notch so if she cracks it gets held then I
do a boring cut near the notch und cut back until she go's .

Nothing wrong with a small stepped back cut, especially with a Saginaw face where the log can slip back off the stump.

Just snuck this one in to get it on the ground tonight so I can just clear it tomorrow morning. Bigger silver maple. We call them swamp maple here also. Got dark quick. Won’t do that again. Anyway I might get flamed for this a little but I have used the “triple hinge” 3 or 4 times now with good success along with wedges. Seems to help steer the tree. Anyone else try it? I am a novice and have a lot to learn.

You might try a siz wheel if done right it’ll pull a root out of the ground. Almost looks like it released early from the stump because of the Dutchman, how much swinging of trees have you done?

I am a rookie faller. I only know a couple of basic cuts and stick with what work for me.
I basically only do open field cuts, as I have no bucket truck or equipment. But I do like to learn and see all of these felling tricks and cuts. [emoji106]
I know my limitations.

The years I spent hand falling I can only think of half a dozen time we’ve ever lined a tree and only pushed a few more then that with the shovel. Basics are the sure way to stay out of trouble, I’ll hardly ever swing a large tree say 5’ on the stump I might slip one off the stump for a lay but even that is asking for trouble.

Yes it released a bit early. It was leaning a bit, I just wanted to get it more to the right where the field was more open. I'll have to look up a siz wheel.

I cut this big hickory today for a gentleman who needed it down and didnt have the confidence or the ability to move fast enough away from it to feel comfortable dropping it. I was in somewhat of a hurry and didnt get a stump pic. I use my 298xp and 3'bar. It was probably 40" on the stump and standing dead. It fell where I gunned it but was hoping it would pull to the right some. It had 8-10" hollow center and hardly any fiber held on for the pull. Wish I got a shot of the stump. 20181019_204644.jpg
