Some sweet looking mowers old 040. Very nice.
What was the sonoduct B&S motor used for. Never seen
anything like it.
Thanks and hi Lee.......the sonoduct was made to be similar to lawnboys "quiet flite" mower, but the sonoduct had over heating issues and Briggs recalled them all, some dealers kept their remaining engines which is how some still survive like the one I owned......here's a pic from the Briggs archives....full-7392-19173-bs_sonoduct.jpg

Here's another old Briggs I found last summer at an antique power show, circa 1957/58, it's the only one I've found or even seen in the wild with the chain drive electric start, and yes, it still works, it's one I'll be re-doing for use, the carb assy was missing on it when I bought it and I still haven't decided if I'll use the "one piece" carb (shown on the engine now) or "two piece" carb which is most likely which one that would have been on this engine, these engines could have come with either style carb.....DSCF0016 (3).jpg DSCF0019 (2).jpg DSCF0020 (3).jpg

Right now the engine is tucked away in my back shed and I can't remember the exact model number on it, but it's not a 6bhs, the "s" stands for suction feed carb, this one was not set up for that, it's either a 6bh, 8bh, 60100, 80100 series engine, I need to dig it back out to verify.......

That electric start is really different , does it disengage from the starter when it's running ?

Sold my one LB mower I had put the new engine on so today I put my other D 501 on an extra deck so I could cut my lawn .
Darn those engines run sweet and not many D 501 engines I know of were used .

Yes, the engine pulley/rope cup is a one way clutch, and luckily it also still works, other than the missing carb assy, there is supposed to be a small chain guard/cover over the chain which was also missing and most likely be a very tough find if at all......

The only thing I have been able to find about them is the bottom bearing is not a bushing like the 600 , it's a needle or roller bearing . I'd like to confirm that but I don't plan on pulling it down to see .
Google will show you little bits of info , but yeah not much info available .

The only place I found some solid info was here http://www.mytractorforum.com/155-walk-behind-mowers/170786-d500-series.html
Otherwise other than the 400 and 600 series not much at all .

The reason my saws run 32:1.

This has served faithfully for twenty eight years. Had a yellow 18" before him.

Don't let the appearance fool you, I just cleaned six-eight years of mung off of him.

Time for an overhaul.

Is there an engine 'kit' with piston/rings, gaskets, bearings and seals?

Bottom bearing has a tad bit of felt play.

Thanks bud!

Background story:
I shopped four places in town for a 21" push Lawnboy and found Payless lumber was 5-10 bux cheaper. Paid at the counter and pulled around back. Fellow loads box in the truck and I go home. Opened the box that clearly says push mower and find a self propelled. Wrong box at the factory.

Did I complain? Hell no!

Thanks for that site Jake , I have an 6.5 M series that someone gave me and I know it needs some attention . Looks like it hasn't seen a lot of use but I'm sure the fuel system is gunked up .
I'll have to try and find a good article I saw about fixing the surging issue with that carb , modify the throttle plate a bit and a different size jet fixed it from what I recall .

Found this 1977 while scrounging for chainsaws. I've got more invested in the carb float and spring than the rest of the mower, but it's really clean and seems low hours.
