Not sure if I have ever posted pics of the new Ironhorse 501 series engine I scored last year (actually 2 of them)

Box it was found in at old dealership stuffed away in a corner buried .
The engine as mentioned is a 501 series which is odd as there were only 400 and 600 series in the D engines . The 501 is supposed to have a needle bearing in the lower crankcase VS the bronze bushing . It's completely original except the flywheel screen which was white and cracked and the bowl drain rubber was dried up , the fuel hose was OK .
The other odd thing is it's not called a lawn-boy but called an Iron horse engine .
I should do it justice and re paint the deck and handle . The fuel tank is steel so it's pre 1973 in age .

Same I know but Iron Horse wasn't used to brand those engines since the 50's or early 60's so I thought it odd .

Great score, Jake. When I was a kid I would always volunteer to mow my uncle's lawn because he had a Lawn Boy.

Awesome thread!

I’m in the process of restoring a 1978 LawnBoy Supreme model 8237AE.

The battery for the electric start had given up the ghost, so I began looking around for a replacement. I discovered that if you can find one, it’ll cost you big time! (roughly $150 with the shipping).

I decided to see if I could rebuild the battery pack. When I opened it up, I found six lead acid batteries (2v each X 6 cells = 12v). The batteries are the size of standard D-size batteries, but have both terminal on the top. I searched and searched and finally found exact replacements for them. Once I knew what they were, I found a seller on eBay that sells them in 3-packs wired in series priced at $26.95 each ( $58 shipped).

After removing a plastic shield on top of the batteries (and removing the hot glue that was holding it on) I wired the 3-packs in series (required a 2 inch wire jumper) and moved the harness over from the old battery. Voila! A brand new battery pack at 1/3 the cost of a new one!

The batteries are called Enersys Cyclon and the part number is 0810-0102. I bought them from eBay seller hightechbattery.

I wanted to share this info in case any of you have one of these and need a replacement battery.

Bill

Ya know, I may have some electric start Lawn Boy stuff in my OPE boneyard. I'll check next time I go through it.

The brick top is my favourite and is a classic to most LB collectors . I like the D series versions but I would like to find a late 50's C model sometime .
hello my fellow canadian, I'm from ottawa and have a 1958 Lawn boy 21 inch OMC model 7150 gold brick top mower with crank start handle, for sale if your still interested, you can text my cell at 613-296-1567

First lawn boy I bought from a local small engine shop when I was 14 was a 1958 . Had the front wheel with the arm setup on the deck .
I would like to find another sometime of about the same vintage and model . The brick top color was a brown-gold if I recall correctly but it was a CDN model so the machines of that area may have been different too .
check out my add in wanted, if i have what you want we could work something out for price, i think its what you talked about in your post
