Anyone ever try Kool grind or anything like it on there grinding wheel for sharpening chains? I don't normally have a problem with Stihl wheels unless its a rocked chain and have to take a good chunk off the tooth. then I notice higher heat even with slower taps of the wheel.

There is a wheel wax from Madsens I have used before. It seems to help some. Keeps the wheel from loading up so fast which would grind cooler.

The company that makes Mike-O-Cut No.87 cutting fluid makes a good wax.
We use porting tools that will drive a 1" ball burr into steel. Just bury it.
We had a good wax years ago we used for that and drills and saws.

Fastenal got into the plant and bought their brand. It sucked.

Now they have the Mike-O-Cut wax and the Burr and Balance folks love it.

I make the a heavy base to set 1/2 a tube in. They say thank you.
Kool grind is good stuff and should work.
You can also drip water onto a brush that touches the wheel.
A mess ?? Yes.

Mike-O-Cut is Great stuff. Both for cutting and assembly strangely enough.

I direct some shop air at the cutter where the wheel is grinding.

Is it as good as liquid or wax ??
Not at keeping it cool

Is it better than using nothing ?
Sure is, plus no mess

Air works well to.
Just different levels.
The wax is good.
Do you have a Vortex blower to cool the air?
Anything adds speed in grinding.
No hurry......no need. Lol

And I bet it keeps it clean.
It would cool better than wax for sure.

Water is only needed for REALLY rocked.
I'm adding air for regular work.
Gonna look for a Vortex!!

No Sir, no air cooler, just regular shop air. I got them plastic snap connectors for fluid ........... stuck a 1/8" refrigeration valve on the air adapter and its soooo easy to regulate the amount of air. Keeps it cool and doesnt blow grindings in yer face. I'll snatch a picture later today after I'm home from work

We use a Vortex to cool the cutter on our 12' Verticle.
No coolant on that beast. Near freezing air. Maybe freezing.

Might be able to buy a CBN grinding wheel for only marginally more than these cooling systems and they are more convenient to boot. CBN wheels run cooler and make less dust and last longer. They can be had for right at 100.

Ive thought about CBN wheels but I really don't have any terrible complaints with Stihl wheels other than the occasional heat and last a long time for the price that my dealer gets them for me. That is why I was considering the kool grind. Are the CBN wheels that great?
