So I have this Wright Stander I'm going to buy from my buddy with a Kawasaki motor on it. I was mowing and smelled oil so I pulled it in the shop. 100 psi on one cylinder, 50 psi on the other. So I figured valves, popped the motor off and put it on the bench.
Intake valve is shot on the right

The entire motor is covered in grime...

So it's obviously not being cooled properly.
After I pulled the heads I turned the motor over to check the cylinders and they look great but I heard something making noise in the crank case. [emoji16][emoji379]
Pulled the crankcase apart and this is on the bottom.

So now I'm at a full rebuild... Then I see this

one tooth missing.
Do I need a crank? Or will this be ok?

Found a loose screw on the breather cover

it was leaking oil which in guessing was the reason for all the grime...
Where is the best place to buy rebuild parts for a Kawasaki?

Check out Smallenginewarehouse.com

See if they offer a repower for your machine.

I think a short block or new engine will be the better long term option. It's more money but that depends on what you will have in the machine.

Looking at the pictures, I agree with your assessment. 1.) oil leak 2.) clogged cooling fins/ lack of cooling 3.) over worked the engine.

Why buy a new engine? What's wrong with rebuilding it? The block is in good shape. The heads are true. $400-500 in parts and I rebuild it.$15-1800 for a new motor.
What am I not seeing?

Just in what I see, from the pictures, I figured a good overhaul will cost more than you posted. I see a exhaust valve burnt. Around here no one will rework them heads. Purchasing a replacement is the only option. They are pricey.

Its a time management for me. Spend a week rebuilding or 1/2 a day and be cutting grass.

This is just for my yard. I don't make money with it. But I'll look into getting the valves fixed before I spend any more money. Thanks Joey.

The 580 is a 19 horsepower. I think the 21 hp are the same blocks just more carburetor. The 23 is the same as 21 but has the Donaldson air filter/ oil cooler.

Not that you would want more power or anything.......:D

How many hours are on the wright stander?

Interesting... So a carb, air filter, oil cooler upgrade brings me from 19 to 23 hp?
The hour meter shows 2100 hrs. The machine itself is in fantastic shape. And it cuts very well, it's compact and is quick. I like it.

So the heads are true, valve seats are good. There is a plastic guide in the governor that melted and the parts fell into the crankcase. The plastic collected on the oil screen. So I need a new camshaft/governor as well.
All in with genuine Kawisaki parts I'm looking at $525 shipped.
I fail to see why it's not worth rebuilding when a new one is $1000+ more. It took me 4 hours to get the engine out of the mower and torn down. If the crank and cam were good it would be $250 in parts.

Thanks Frog! I'm looking into other options.
What's a better engine?

Or Briggs intek?

Hmmm, I wouldn't consider rebuilding a 2000+ hour Kaw for commercial work. curious to see how this plays out for you for personal use. Great engines if well maintained. Once hosed though they get pricey to repair. If you were paying for labor it would be too close to a new engine to risk.

The Courage twins are good engines. The singles are junk. Briggs can be hit or miss but we have blown up a bunch of Briggs twins. The Courage twin for that price is an awesome deal.

Agreed. And after looking closer... There are no bearings. The crank and can ride directly on the case. And I can see where the aluminum has gotten hot and left dark spots which are accumulated aluminum... So with out machining and installing bearings it probably won't hold up. And that certainly puts it out of reasonable cost. [emoji35]
