Is 3 Chains Per Bar Really the Rule of Thumb?

I will continue to grease my bar tips. If I have a catastrophic failure I will report back so everyone can flame me, get a good laugh, and bust my balls. LOL
I've got a couple bars I use for sharpening chains in the vise that the tips are trashed(got with saws I've bought and not sure what they did), but I've not had a problem with them either when I was greasing them or since I've quit. I figure if your running a sharp chain and the oiler works or you grease the tips all the time you should be fine.
I wonder whether lubing the sprocket nose with a dry lube like powdered graphite or moly disulfide or hexagonal boron nitride would work...
I don't see the need if your doing as previously mentioned both above :rolleyes: and earlier in this thread.

A couple of ways that nose sprockets wear / fail:
- bearing failure, that may be due to lubrication;
- tip spreads, which may be due to debris getting inside;
- sprocket teeth wear, which is due to wear / use.

Initial quality is an issue. Some things, like bore / plunge cutting can be harder on nose sprockets.
I don't think that a dry lube / powder would provide the same kind of lubrication for the little roller bearings that oil or grease does.

If you wear out a bar with only 3 chains you are doing something wrong ,even milling i have never seen that.lack of oil somewhere if bar runs that hot. 3 chains i hardley have the paint logos wore off at all.

I think the oil would rinse it out I use lots of graphite. Not sure on the others. I just don’t grease mine ever. Even the cheap laminated bars I like the tips last a long time

I hate when they disqualify a correct answer for minor spelling or pronunciation errors. Really makes Alex Trebek look like a big, mean, dyck.

I like Weird Al!

He doesn't do it, the judges do :).
Sorry Philbert that would be "what is a armor tip bar Alex".
Although maybe not the exact one as I can't see it clearly in his picture.
Cool thread though :).
