interesting 064

so awhile ago I got this very nice 064. the owner wants me to validate weather it's a factory built saw or made from nos parts. here's what I found.











notice the decal on the front of the case, and the wax/paint dote on the muffler.
I also notice that it has a hd filter, and the filter cover is a tad off, a little darker.
case has a serial number.

I didn't clean the saw before or during any pics

no sign of use at all, even the oil tank is clean and dry.

Possibly a full rebuild/repaint?
Any of the plastics or tank not stihl and Chinese?

100% oem, and appear to be date correct. has a wj 10a carb

Do you have a Serial No.?
I can check it online.

Seemslike a german build 064 with the sticker on the front.
Wax on the muffler normal on the first factory run to prove that the muffler was hot from first run time and carb adjustment at factory..

most stihl parts are date coded, the arrow points to number 4 and there is a "Y" in the center. this is on the gas tank.

4th month, what year is "Y"?

we tried running the serial number through stihl, says number is too old.

The 064 was built a long time for the german military under the type 045 AVEQ and with oilve-green covers instead of orange (dont ask why -.- )

Maybe they built some for other markets in orange.

the saw does not look like it was run at the factory or a dealer. I think at the time they tested 1 in 10.

Ok at the german factory they tested every unit and adjusted the carb.
If they had to tune the carb 1/4 round off the normal tune they were sorted out for an audit and were pressure checked and disassembled and the whole batch was stopped and held back.

Serial start with a 1?

They had a wax pen that the last one in line pressed against the hot muffler and he put the saw in the box.

Is it possible a dealer built it Johnny Cash style, 1 piece at a time?

stihl told us they didn't check every saw until the epa made it mandatory. not saying your wrong, just what we were told by stihl.

American or german factory? In germany even old 028 hat those marks.

With EPA they had the automated carb adjustment and documentation with ait har obot that does everything and measures the emissions. Fuel hose to the fuel line and the Robot starts the saw and adjusts the carb and says go or no-go since epa. They have a database with every emission check just for those epa folks

I have no idea on those datecodes. I ll ask some people about this.
I can imagine that this saw was at a dealership and was aparts donator for a while.
We have a MS 261 here just like that, its 3 years old an every plastic was swaped out in this time, as they were not on stock at the moment.


Not in the online database. And not in the parts list either.
