No, really the only Stihl's OEM I've run are 460's, 660's, and a variety of 290/391 class saws. So this 038 is all new to me even if its an old saw design.
The oil pump drive gears system looks a bit odd unless you have seen it before but it works ok. The 038 supper is a bit of a cult saw over here and the Magnum even more so . Was wondering what cylinder they have based the kit on ..61 cc ..standard 038..66.8cc supper or the Mag 72 cc?
Iv only had a 038 supper (plus a 028 supper ) through my hands , stout runner, typical Stihl ...Iv always liked the curving cover lines on this 028-048 group.

72cc version is what these are copies of....52mm top ends. I do need a good pic of the chain brake assembly though.

I have the Oem av jug on a salvage saw that I pieced aftermarket in. Once Walt starts getting times in on these builds I'll get some timed cuts on this one...even with a slightly smaller jug we should still be able to get an idea.

:D..To many P's...its common at my age :)
Hi simon I always thought it was kind of odd they make this love it or hate it model stihl I've only seen a few over the years around here i always thought they were heavy for their displacement but good saws and they don't make a husqvarna 288 which are still very popular here and i hope they make a clone of myself plus they would make a killing with a chinese eliminator air filter clone for a 288 lol

They were not as light as the next generation of Stihl saws for sure Dave but with the 038 starting its production in 1980 they were of there time and construction i guess. ..37 yrs ago !
The Super with 4.4hp was popular in UK but the Mag that Walts saw kit is based on was just that bit more saw.

I was going to mention after watching the vid... when you were grinding on the "ears" of the circlips... watch out, those tiny ears go flying...INTO open crankcases...

nearly had that happen to me.

So have to stop and order a couple of parts. The band for the chain brake has a crack in one of the ends....metal must have been too brittle. A manufacturing flaw. Possible a systemic issue so CHECK if you get one of these. :) Headed to the Stihl dealer in the AM to get an OEM. LIKE the MS660's there is good and bad parts in the kit. A lot of good stuff, a few you will want to upgrade. Think this saw is worth sorting out from what I see.

It seems like a lot of the AM kits have mentions of brake band issues. I've been studying several of the threads looking into buying a kit. I noticed that it looks like you have built the 660, 036 and this 038. Are there other kits you have built (361; 440?). Thanks for the video as well.

No, just those. Was looking for a companion smaller saw to the 660's. The 036 is running, but the 038 seems to have more "History" attached so I will try both, then decide which gets added to the work rotation. Actually the channel will move back into Husqvarna territory for a while....a few "Dead Saw Salvage" projects exploring the cost of taking OEM saws at the end of their service life and bringing them back to useful. A few 385's are on the bench right now.
