Picked up a 1999 362xp today for cheap. Starts and runs. It suffered a trees wrath,
brake handle broke- have on hand
handle bar bent - have on hand
cylinder av damaged - have on hand
front av Bent - have on hand

Now the bad, missing clutch cover, small mount, some what rare
case is broke behind the clutch where the movement limit screw is
Muffler is dead and will have to cut it off to check piston

So should I convert to a 365/372 case? Have extra clutch covers on hand. New, used or after market

I'll get a picture up when I get home from work.

Change the case, change the bearings whilst at it. I don’t think there are any 362 am clutch covers. They are a slight different stud spacing as well as diameter. I thought about tig welding a 372 cover up and re drilling the holes to suit the 362 case. In the end I changed the case to a 372 used case and put new skf bearings whilst at it and stuck a 365 oem cylinder I had to hand. The 362xp cylinder can be made to run well though. An rev like a mad ass hornet.

Still undecided on what I'm going to do.
Piston looks good, but top fins are broke.
From what I can find OEM case and clutch cover are available but expensive.
Has a new oem starter cover, and new HD12b carb. I believe the saw had little use until it got crushed.

I just "made love" to a Stihl MS661 C M that got run over by a 12-ton skid loader. It took $500 in OEM parts (no after market available) to put it back into running condition. The owner insisted that I try to repair it. The handlebar was bent into a pretzel, the chain brake snapped off, the case showed stress cracks, pull cord housing ruined, tank housing destroyed, etc. etc. Sometimes I just cannot believe how much punishment that a saw's case can take and survive.

It was a whale of a gamble to spend that kind of dough on parts without knowing if the saw would run again. It's got 155 psi compression and it started and ran yesterday. I guess the Man upstairs was on our side. Frankly, I was almost in shock and in disbelief when it kicked over and fired right up.

I can show Pics, but I do not want to hi-jack this thread.

Myself, I would try to keep it 362 just because there aren't many of them around. But if you're looking to build yourself a work saw I might get her going with whatever 365/372 parts I could scrounge up

New build thread coming. A lot of scubbing and a couple of beers, I'm ready to pressure and vacuum test one 362. A second one going to get a bath and stripped down. New bearing, gaskets etc. A third in the works that will be built on a Farmertec case with OEM guts. If I can remember to order all my small parts I'll have 5 or 6 milk crates empty.

Here goes a beered up build from 3 no runners to maybe something nice. Started by cleaning the case I received in the mail. I had a set of OEM gaskets and seals, for the China case I bought.

Crank and Bearings from the broken case, low hour well maintained before it was attacked by a tree. Crank and bearing fresh out of the freezer, and case out of the oven. All the hardware cleaned up.

Tank, fuel line, handle bar installed. Ready for pressure and vacuum testing. Waiting on fuel filter and Carb kit for final assembly. Also need to round up a bar and chain or a .325 sprocket.

    So you're keeping it a 362, cool!

I've never seen a 362 torn down, those lower transfers are interesting. Are the uppers quads or duals?? Kinda hard to see in the pics, but they look like dual??
