Even if you end up having $400 into it will be worth it imo.
Your probably right. I probably shouldn’t say this here put 288s just haven’t impressed me that much. Dang 394 may have ruined my perspective lol.

I don’t guess you have a clean cylinder in the old parts pile do you? Btw that 394 tank I got from you worked out great.

I don't have any used cylinders right now, but never know when I will come across one, although I am currently not out there looking like I have been in the past, if I do I will pm you first though.

Looks like they used some coarse sandpaper to try to remove transfer then gave up. This is about as good as it would clean up. Is this cylinder trash? I really hate to have 400 in the thing if I have to buy an oem top end. What would y’all do?
I assume it still has the original piston that is scored a bit? Only putting a new ring isn't enough if so.

Yeah I know that was the rebuild the last guy did. If he had cleaned it up and done it right it would probably be fine. He didn’t even put a piston in it. The ring that come out looked brand new other than it had scraped off some of the unremoved transfer.

@72thing tried to clean it up for me. That is the method he uses but the streaks you see look like they are down in the grooves. So like @Stump Shot said the cylinder is probably history.

Should be able to feel it with your finger in there to tell what's going on better than your eye's. Should be smooth like a baby's behind.

I would say put a new meteor piston kit in it and call it the day.

I just sold a 181 that was sold to be as having a burned out coil, it was the filthiest saw I've ever come across and under all the crap was a loose wire that I reconnected and it started on the 4th pull . The seller was a jerk to deal with which made it even more satisfying.
Now I've got a 181, 281 and 288 to build so thanks @Onan18 once again for this thread.
