I am rebuilding a 345 into a 346 with muffler mod and gasket delete, no porting.

Am I short changing myself by using the 345 ignition coil? Would you recommend an unlimited coil and if so, which one from which vendor?

How can you tell if the one being sold is unlimited? Lots for sale, non say unlimited except for one AM I have found in Baileys.

Thanks!

^^^Correct^^^ at least with OEM coils, black is unlimited, blue is limited...

I don't know if this is true across the board, but most blue coils I have seen have the RPM limit stated on them. The blue coil I removed from my 372XPW stated 13,300, if I recall the later blue 346 coils are 14,100.

Is the 345 coil you have black or blue??? If black, run 'er! If blue, check and see what the stated limit is. If it's 14,100 I don't think you will be hurting yourself. I don't know if other saws got the 14,100 limited coils or if it was solely the 346 that got those. But I would definitely NOT run a sub-14,000 coil on a 346. Those little hornets like to spin!

I have not yet used an AM coil so I cannot speak to what brands are good and what brands to steer clear of.

Also, look around for used OEM black coils.. If I'm not mistaken, the same coil applies to all XP saws from 346 through 372, and I want to say 385 and 390 as well but I am not 100% certain and ready to stand corrected if I am wrong.. I am running a black OEM coil from a 359 in my 372XPW right now and it is currently spooling 14,400+. It could be tuned a little higher but I haven't. In fact I'll probably dial it back just a little for everyday work....

As far as I know Joe..Mk 1 45cc 346xp's weren't limited over here ...mine ran 15000 rpm +. I believe the new edition ones were not so high rpm , that could be the reason , the coil had a limiter and our old friend the Zamma carb with caps :D. I know there are differences in Euro and USA spec so i thought i would mention .

I think you are spot on Simon. The OE 346 I overhauled at work recently has the black coil. My NE 346 has blue and I'm pretty sure the blue 346 coils are limited at 14.1k, which is pretty respectable but I doubt it would suffice for a ported 346. I haven't gotten to my 346 yet, she's still bone stock, not even a muffler mod yet.

I am not sure however why the change to the Zama carb happened. I would be curious to know for sure if it was just due to the limited coil?? Or perhaps the troubles they had with the Walbro on 357/359?? Or maybe a cost thing??

But I do know one thing... I will have to source a couple more black coils if I keep porting my saws!! Lol!

Same as you Joe...I can't say for "sure" why the change to Zamma. You have many more emission rules imposed earlier in the US so there could logically be some tie up with the launch of the NE needing to meet different rules + the upping to aprox 50cc with a primmer bulb ....maybe the Walbro wasn't best at taking the extra pipes for the primmer ??
Your 346 NE or OE ? :Edit...you said ..Dowww :D

Hello!
Would a 357xp black coil fit a 372xp or 390xp?
I have a friend who's selling a 357xp black coil and I would like to buy it.
Here are some pics, not the best, hope someone can help me!
Thank's!

Have a look at the "Husky Coil Collage " thread that spike60 started ....its in the chainsaw forum. That should help you out.

I have a black 359 coil in my ported 372 right now. Works as it should.
