Recently picked up a 288 locally. Already have a 390, was planning to have the 390 ported. Which do y'all think is better of the two? Ported and stock.

I would send the 288 to Tree Monkey! He's got those 2 port jugs figured out! I had him do my 288 and 2186. The 288 is stronger and faster

I have ported like them both I think the 390 needs the band cut on them the 288 is just a solid reliable old son of a gun. Shaun had a thread on the other site of 2 288 he built that were just plain nasty they were cutting machines Adam had some vids of a 288 and a Mike lee 385 in some big maple with 32 B/C full comp chains they were nice.

Yep. Any chain that I get that would take a lot work to get back to the usual, I take it to the grinder! Done a few for others too.

You guys aren't making this thing much easier! ;) One of them I guess would be to eventually sell. My 390 already has the full wrap bar, and would be easier to get parts for. I've heard a lot of good things about the 288, and just looking under the cover they look a lot simpler. Not that the 390 is complicated. After getting one ported I'd like to get a 32-36in bar with skip chain, occasional use. Probably 24 for normal use.

Dunno but I kept my old stock 288 and sold the new ported 390...

The 390 was faster and more powerful, as it should be

The 288xp is an event all on its own, a beautiful beaten up old thumper! Has big balls too, makes me smile more than the 390 ever did

I'll send the top end to TN someday

Also, it came with a high top, top cover; but it still has the small filter. Something worth converting?

The 288 is a solid tough saw, and it can be made to run on par with a 390 in big stuff. The 390 will win from more RPM potential in smaller stuff but the 288 is more of a torque monster. The 288 AV is more solid than the 390, it can be a little rough if you are bucking a lot but it feels better and you have more control with a long bar.
