Got this Husky 242 on my bench, its a friends. The PTO side seal wasnt holding vacuum so I replaced the seal. Its holding pressure and vacuum just fine now. Problem is it runs fine with the cover off, put the cover on it stalls. First time for this to happen. Air filter has a small slit in it on 1 side and 5 holes have been drilled in the cover. What do you guys think?

Does it run with the filter on and no cover?

Dont even know if its the right cover, I suppose so. He said he bought it overseas. The original carb settings were 2 1/2 L, 0 H. I assume it was to compensate from the seal leaking. Now its correct at about 1 and 1. Is the cover smothering the air filter? Cant be too much air or when the covers off it would do it, I think...

There's a different cover for the model 42 that I think has a slightly different shape - it could be making contact with the air filter. I think I remember Saw-King telling me that you couldn't use the 42 cover on the 242
without changing the air filter.

Ereplacement parts list the same number for the air filter for the 42 and 242. Cant find the number for the 42 top cover. The number for the air filter on the saw is 5031520, top cover is 5034560.

The hole drilled in the cover takes the prefilter out of the equation.

The original post states dies when cover is put on.

Does the cover just affect the idle? The engine requires very little air for idle. Any major blockage of air would cause problems reving and hi speed/load. Does it run and cut well without cover on?

The air filter filters from the top and bottom so wouldn't be blocked much by the cover anyway.
You may want to check the red wire going to the upper coil for potential shorts, proper grounding or connector looseness.

It runs and cuts fine with the cover off. Put the cover on it will choke, hi idle rev, but as soon as you blip the throttle to bring it down to regular idle it stalls. Take the cover off and it runs fine.
