So a friend of mine has what im told is a walnut stump and he wants to cut some slabs from it. Ive never milled before, and this will all be freehand. He was thinking crosscut the whole thing after trimming it. It seems like we would lose a lot of the cool grain by crosscutting the whole stump. Whatchu guys think?

Thought about that, and most of the root flare will be trimmed so i doubt it will be anywhere near 5' across as shown in the pic.

Whats the max it can take realistically, actual inside measurement is always less than the "advertised" width right?

Not 100% sure. I think it will cut 36 (35, realistically) wood with a 40"plus bar

My knee jerk reaction would be to push it into the burn pile.

That is likely rotted to hell.

Iffin it were fresh cut, yeah maybe.

We just drove past the backside of Missouri Valley Walnut and the pile of logs there is impressive.[emoji33]

agree. I would free hand some pieces off to see how bad the rot is before I put too much effort in...depending on what the burls would be used for.

It looks crusty, but i guess its only been sittin a couple years. Hes gonna keep working on removing more dirt etc... he might just end up buying a 48" granberg, he does tree work and ends up with cool wood a fair bit so he's likin that idea.
