You think it will cut OK? I haven't tried it in wood yet. lol
That cutter shape will probably do fine in softer wood, but like hedgerow said with side beak it won't last long. First time I tried my square file it was similar to yours, I sunk it in some live oak and after one cut it was done. Lol

My objective today was two fold. Lol. I kind of knew the beak would go fairly quick, and I was hoping that it would just disappear. Lol
Then I could start over. But it cut through the whole tree pretty well, but it was a small tree. It was pretty hard too. I think it was a Dogwood.
Nonetheless, I also wanted to get a gauge on what it would cut like.
But I know I gotta go back to the drawing board. Lol
I appreciate the feedback guys. Thanks. [emoji106]

I found a little forward lean is ok but if you can get a vertical side plate and a deep durable corner, it'll cut great and last a long time. Even in hard wood.

I will. But that was actually a brand new chain with only 3 strokes taken off each tooth. Lol

I'm still learning too. The first time I used a square file I used it like a round file. Talked about a messed up cutter:rolleyes:

Here is a couple of pics of my square file chain after cutting a tree. Still pretty sharp go the touch.
I tried touching up the chain to see if I could get the beak off, and I went from bad to worse. Lol
Looks like I won't give up my round file chains just yet. I really gotta figure this out. [emoji52]

Once you get the hang of it, you'll be hooked. It's also more interesting and fun to file than round, in my opinion.

I hear you Sondre. [emoji106]
I figured I would ruin a chain in the learning process. Lol
I am trying like heck to get it right. [emoji3]

Wow Jeff! I'm really kinda excited to see you trying the square chain thing. Good on you buddy. Just keep at it and you will get there.
Do you still have a loop of the square chain you had at the NY gtg?
Maybe try holding your file in one of the cutters and see how it lines up. Then you can try and hold the file in the same way when sharpening your experimental chain.
Again, this is great to see. Awesome stuff Jeff.

Just curious what's next after you get the square filed chain down? Maybe cutting square wood??? Lol

Lol. Good Mike. My saws like to cut real wood. Lol
I suck at Square filing right now. I am getting good info in here. I gotta keep trying. But I ain't throwin my round files out yet. [emoji6]
I think I sent that square file chain back to Dallas. I killed it when I cut some downed trees shortly after the NY gtg.

I gotta get some file handles to fit these double bits. All my handles only fit the pointy round files.

I will try that too Kevin. My beak just got worse when I touched it up today. Lol
I will try again midweek.
Thanks for all the tips. I appreciate the help. God only knows, I need it. Lol
