Thinking about skip chains and how @treemonkey likes semi skip got me wondering. Is there a direct correlation between how much skip to use and how muck wood your cutting. Not taking into account horsepower that is pulling the chain, just how much can you cut before you need the room in the chain for chip clearance.

Example ratio I assume is somethink like:
24" and less : no skip
24-36" : half skip
36"+ : full skip

Ive never operated a saw with skip chain/semi skip chain. I think its more a function of depth guage setting/wood type. Long bar and more depth like would be run in softwood seems like it would be great with skip/semi. I cut zero softwood, so a shorter bar with a comparatively higher depth guage setting works for me.

I'm not a pro but yeah for dropping a big assed tree it'll do. Better than a 50cc anyhow. Usually I use a 20 inch on that Saw.

Been doing some storm cleanup in east TN with a 661, 36" bar and full comp chain. It works, but only because no one around here caries skip of any kind. My dealer is supposed to order a few loops of full skip for the 36" bar for me. We have been working on a few 200+ year old oaks on a dairy farm.

I run 3/8 Full chisel Full comp on my 28" bar on my 066. When I have the chain razor sharp it's pretty much all that 066 can handle with it's 8-pin driver. Wicked fast cutting machine, but a little grabby. I now have a new 42" bar for the 66. Takes 135DL chain. I bought a 25' box of full chisel full skip chain.....will make 3 chains for this bar and have 5 drive links left over!!!

I have a new 3/8" .050 20" Oregon semi-skip that I have not used yet, but from what I understand, semi-skip clears chips better. Am I correct in my understanding?

I recently got a 36”with a full skip for my 661. My nice 28” that I only have full comp is sitting on the bench now, while I don’t need the 36” all that often it pulls nice and is easy to sharpen. Call me lazy, you won’t be wrong.
