Honda HRS21

I just bought a Honda HRS21 push mower. It is probably from the 1980s, it has an aluminum deck. The spark plug boot, coil cover and air filter cover are missing. I clamped a spark plug to the exposed wires of the plug wire and I didn’t see any spark. The blade safety brake is working as it should. Is it common for ignition coils to go out in these mowers? It appears the ignition is NLA for these.

un-hook the kill wire to coil and pull it over and see if you have spark

I did that and still no spark.
