Time-sert is what I was thinking. They are made by Wurth...anything with a funny sounding name should be good.
Yes, much better than a hell coil. A saw plug is M14, they make kits just for plugs with different length inserts

Time-sert are very good but very expensive, I bought a m8 1.25 kit with 10 helicoils for 30$ today, not to bad I thought.

Jay,
I looked at the Heli-coil and they just look like solder or wire coils. the time serts look like an actual "insert" that is threaded and "barbed". I bought a "OEM fix-a-thread" today and gonna give it a whirl. it was the closest looking to the Time-sert and about $30 for the kit. the inserts are $11 bucks for about 10( after you buy the kit)

Is it necessary to remove the jug to repair plug hole?

this is a MS 461...takes like 15 minutes to get the head off..(and most of that is cleaning the chit off) .ain't worth the risk for me...
plus this one had a scored intake side of the piston which I would have never seen had I not pulled the jug.
all around better to pull and check rings and everything while your in there and give it a good cleaning( metal burs)

I generally do, I guess piston at tdc you could blow everything out?
Technically no, but I'm paranoid about filings getting in there. I've seen people flip the saw over in a vise and do it upside down

I haven't had to do it yet. But thats pretty much what I figured. Safe than sorry. Thanks

Timeserts for the bar studs. Or make your own inserts. I've never used a Helicoil except on 5mm and 6mm stuff.

Old topic.
Found this while researching model 55 intake partition blues. Checked at 7 local retailers for m5 x .8 helicoils and no luck. Gonna play the am-a-zom game I guess.

Anyways someone asked about plug repair w/out head removal. Had a Chevy with Al heads blow a spark plug out of the head.
I put that cyl to TDC, filled with shaving cream, drilled it, placed the insert, shop vaced it and drove on. It worked fine, THAT time.
