So there I was, watching John Reilly's square filing vids, two clicks later I'm ordering a save edge file from @Definitive Dave, blink my eyes and a file is in my mailbox!

Then the fun starts. I'm working on my angles, getting the feel of it, and....

Not quite what I was expecting

I just got 2 square chains with a slightly used bar. My first square chains and I haven't cut with them yet. I'm looking forward to getting into some WOOD with them

I would try to give advice on better technique but my only chain work is normally in the dirt so it wouldn't be of any use :)

My apprenticeship has only just begun. I'm not ready to absorb that depth of knowledge just yet.

Reviewing, and understanding this, is my best advice for getting started. Basically, for hardwood, I try to keep it simple (factory angles), 45 degrees back, down, and tilt. Works for me.

    Y'all think that's bad,

You should try that Jasha, Mike Lee, or Mattrow chain: gotta wear those cut-proof glasses just to look at them.
