I spent the last couple days bucking, splitting and stacking myself. Mostly hackberry. I also have a fair amount of hedge to do as welll. I have a covered area I usually stack a few cords in then I move outside and stack as well. If I’m busy in the shop during heating season I’ll burn 3-4 cords a year. I get a lot from a friend who does roll off work and lot clearing plus a couple tree guys. I’m not picky about what comes in. The last four, yes four, roll off loads were mostly hackberry with some Osage, a few random Elm and another tree I’m not sure about.

That's not my pile of wood, and it's not me standing on it, but I put every piece through my splitter. About half yesterday and half today. Pretty slow start this morning at -5F. Took a long time for the hydraulic fluid to get over 30 degrees.

This is actually a view from a narrower angle. It goes to within a few feet of that shed behind the pile. The guy in the picture guessed/calculated 12 cords, which seems kinda high. I'd believe 8 though.

Tree service wood that has been drug through the mud and gravel several times sure plays hell on chains, but it is worth it! I busted ass going through some smaller piles. The main pile on the other side of the lot was drying up. Between my buddy loading trailers for friends and other people picking away it was going quick. I motivated him to load up the big dump with the last of the good stuff and drop it in my area. Score!

Edit: This is the point the maul takes a break and the splitter comes out to play...20200108_174617.jpg

A lot of this last pile is beyond saving, but I'm certainly going to salvage what I can out of it. I'm a lucky man to have such a nice place by the river to do my firewooding to say the least. Finally took the time to cover the pile before the next round of downpours came through. My rough estimations of the pile put it right around 8 chords of the good stuff!20200109_170029.jpg 20200109_170450.jpg 20200109_170510.jpg 20200110_105924.jpg

My lift makes the big ones easy to handle. Haven't had much luck getting a steady tree fairy after my last one got messed up with drugs. We do have one that drops off loads at my best friend's place when he is in the area. I'm pretty lucky right now as we have more wood than time to process. Most of our trees are yard trees and seems like they have very little straight wood.

Pile sure is growing! Not a bad view ya have there, by a river, while you pick away at your logs.

Certainly a healthy mix. From a tree service and most people are scared of the bigger stuff so it is usually all mine.

It's amazing how much wood I get and how much tree work I get, just having bigger saws. People around here, only have tiny homeowner chainsaws, so no one messes with stuff over a foot or so, so I get called alot. Between bigger saws and a forklift, I drum up quite a bit of business. Having the capability to handle the big stuff is nice!

I'm in western Kansas, and our trees are the same way! The straightest parts are the trunks. The branches are usually all over the place and go in every direction.
