Since I have these sticks now,
IMAG0491.jpg

I decided to dismantle my last partial turkey oak log which I kept for "play".
IMAG0492.jpg

Turkey oak splits much easier than beech!

I won't be processing much firewood today, scorching sun, no cloud cover whatsoever - somewhere around 40℃ in the shade.

You know Chipper it pays to be nice & be grateful to folks.
I called the guy and sincerely thanked him for allowing me access to
his backyard while he was @ work and for the wood.
I also told him if it was still available when I got my saw up and running, I'd come back with the MS 660 and noodle the other stuff in short order.

Here is his reply!!!
"Cool...I just need it gone so whenever you are able to come get it, come get it.
I'm marking it as sold on the market place but it's all yours.... I have one more tree to cut down that's in the front yard right beside the house. I'll try to get it cut down this coming up winter. If you want it you can have it also."

BTW...anybody got an educated guess on how many cords may be in these rounds?

Nice score! I'm going to guess between 2 and 3 cord, closer to 2.

Heck yeah.
I'd say there are just over 50 rounds, average 2-300 each = 10-15000lbs divided by about 4000lbs per cord for seasoned white oak and you should have 2.5-3.75.
Nice score! I'm going to guess between 2 and 3 cord, closer to 2.
Surprised you're going so low on your guesstimation after getting all that oak you just got, you must be conservative:b1:.
Either way thats some heavy stuff:coleman:.

Heavy dry wood is good wood. Hoping the tree crew shows up his week coming to kill those locust trees a few blocks up the hood. They, they load logs for free
Sure hope you get it.
Black locust is good stuff, one of my favorites.
Seasons real quick since it has such a low moisture content to begin with, and then it's between red and white oak for BTU's. The only issues with it are; the bark leaves a lot of ash, over-coaling, and if you get poked by a sliver or one of the thorns is can hurt/itch for a long time. Good thing my wife makes a tincture that takes that itch/infection right out.
Did I say I like black locust :clap2:.

The best!
No thorns here...all yard trees never browsed on. Straight tall mfr's. I'm going to eyeball them for floor boards and in ground large post.

I found a tree limb of osage. Might have found an over 10' osage log clear at 50". I'm told this stick came off of the same tree as this fat log. Saw the log years ago but had no idea what it was. It was cut approximately fifteen years ago. No bark, no rot and all clear.

Got a call about some large cedar but never heard back this week.

Oh yeah....I got a go... forgot all about the two cords of white oak pile near by. He has up to two foot by two foot rounds...sweet stuff wished I had it in eight to ten foot logs or longer.

Checked the dead red oak lands in Tabernacle. Forty cords of standing/falling dead trees 18" to 60ft or so.

I always seem to be a little disappointed after measuring my stacks from a fresh hoard. It feels like more when you are hauling it home. Lol. So I've learned to guess conservative.

This was one of the only times I've impressed myself. Pic is from many years ago as my son is now 19. I full on hoarded apple when it was $1 for a permit to cut all you want. I ended up w/ 16 cord!

I don't think you can truly appreciate the amount of work involved processing apple orchard wood. There's a ton of limbing, some above shoulder height, just to get to the base. And the orchard owners want you to throw all the limb wood in a decently straight row.

Turkey oak is crazy heavy even after years of seasoning being bucked, split and debarked - I love it.

No chance to burn it the year it got processed though, You are basically burning one piece of wood to dry the other, chimney plugs shut within one or two weeks.

Wow that does look like a lot of work. What happened to the trees did they die?

Some play wood last week I picked from our firewood pile. Was about 4,000-4500lbs all together I think. Was tempted to stick some more in there but didn’t want to push the trailer’s limits. Hickory and maple are heavy! 86C0E364-5F33-4818-99BA-45BB93F2B0BF.jpeg 2D56689E-A879-4FEA-B5AD-B53780279A8B.jpeg
