Hello!

I'm a veteran living abroad in Greece and wanted to reach out and get to know some of the other OPE fans that are also veterans on the forum.

It's a bit early yet, but what does everyone have planned for Memorial Day weekend next month?

Cheers,
Dan

Lay low. Visit the cemetery for my parents. Have a nice family picnic.

And thank you for your service sir.

Sounds like a good weekend. Proud to have served.

Work, the official start of summer for game wardens.

Ouch. Be safe out there. I hope it's not too hot. Being from MS, I know about that humidity too.

I've got a soft spot for people that serve, whether it be in the military or public service.

I'm probably going to fire up the smoker and work on the boat. Been trying to get it back in the water for around 10 months. I may just have it done by end of May.

Thanks, the weather is always hit or miss in East TN. What kind of boat and what's wrong with her?

I've got a clone of the Boston Whaler Montauk 17. It's a 1994 and had stringer rot and the flotation foam was soaked. I bought it that way and have been trying to get it all put back together. A lot of fiberglass work and a lot of itching! Lol. It has been a fun project though. I'm setting it up for family and fishing.

Cool boat design. You rip out the floor and do all new foam and deck?

Yeah, sure did. It's now 18mm marine ply. Also built a new console and added some storage boxes. I'm trying to design a built in cooler that sits in front of the console and doubles as a seat. Beefed up the transom and will put on an engine bracket. Should go pretty well and have quite a bit of room.

The outside was pretty rough too. It looked like it was moored over some rocks at one point. I fixed all the damage and plan to spray the outside with epoxy paint when the wind dies down next month.

I’m usually pretty low key on Memorial Day. I plan on taking my boys to the cemetery to put flags on both of my grampas graves (USN & USAF) and my uncles grave (USN). Proud of their service and miss them every single day that goes by.

I’m a member of the Honor Guard in my unit so I’ll be carrying the colors in a parade or two also.

Memorial Day is about remembering those we’ve lost in service and I’d like to say thank you to those that have fallen and I pray for strength for those coping with the loss of a loved one. I also pray for the healing of those battling PTS.

Stay safe out there my fellow vets, and thank you for your service. @USMC615 @Kenskip1 @Moparmyway

Very nice. Snap a few pics when you can please.
Boston Whalers are awesome boats. USCG approved.[emoji106]
Not sure on the knockoffs, but it should go really good. Very sea worthy boats.

Typically keep it low key; small fire in the backyard to build up a nice bed coals to cook up a late lunch. We cook oversized baked potatoes slathered in butter and sea salt wrapped in aluminum foil in the coals, I will marinate a couple ginormous steaks (wife prefers NY strip, I like ribeyes) for a day or 2 and cook them over the coals and have a nice salad.

Every year after lunch I make calls to a few of my Gold Star families; share some stories, talk some shiite, have some fun. It is an emotional ordeal; both happy and sad. After a couple hours on the phone I stoke up the fire, grab a cigar, a very strong drink and sit be the fire usually telling stories. Most of the time my Marines swing by, share a drink or 2.

Its a complicated day. No one I know wants to be cried over upon their death; they want their life to be celebrated. But there really is no such thing as a “Happy” Memorial Day. We all make the best of it.

I did not write this, just passing it along as it is so very sadly true.

A Terrific Poem
He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor
While he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
“OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

Curt, nice to hear from you. Difficult times those holidays that remind us.

Thanks for your service.

Cheers, :beer-toast1:

Fire the grills or smokers up, have some friends, a couple of Marine Corps League Jarheads usually swing by, drink a beer, a toast to our fallen brothers/sisters, and enjoy some good eats!
