Who uses what to keep these dang things from coming out???

Also, stripped a 346xp muffler bolt hole on one side, going to tap it one size bigger now, might as well do both sides.

I found conflicting temps listed. Regular red has an operating temp of 65-300F. High strength red has an operating temp of 65-450F. But then I found other sources that say it releases at 500F.

How hot does a saw cylinder and muffler get I wonder? Anyone have one of those laser thermometers?

I have had more problems with muffler bolts siezing than falling out. I use high temp copper/zinc base lube >1200° as soon as any new/old saw comes into my possesion. Often I am removing mufflers to clean exhaust ports and mufflers or checking piston/rings. The last thing I would want is a loctite type product that sets and gunks up. But I do what I do and you may view things different if you are loosing bolts etc. I have come across some pretty stiff muffler bolts on low hr units, removing the bolts is more important 'to me' than keeping them secure.

Thanks for all the replies, I have done 30+ saws and not used anything, now 2 in a row???

Now I'm nervous about all the sawz I have fixed for friends

I like the shorter bolts that go inside the muffler, only the head is sticking out past where it holds the muffler on, the long ones like on 346 I would think vibrate from engine resonance more due the whole shaft being inside the muffler

Not to sound like a smart azz but this is part of what I do for a living regarding threaded fasteners .To get max holding power it takes at least 4 times the hole diameter in depth in aluminum,2 in cast iron and one it steel . A properly torqued threaded fastener, lubricated is almost impossible to loosen up .More failures occur from under tight than slightly over tight .The dished bellevile washer allows for some expansion .Then again tight is tight too tight is broken .
