Well to keep the clutter out of the 590 thread, I will start this one.

First cuts brand new out of the box, limiters, 18" .325 oregon semi chisel.

Decent compression sotck.

Plenty of skirt on this one, .043 off the base.

Better.

Piston wash.

Pretty much identical to the 500p in miller mod saws thread.

Another great thread Red.

I may have to grab a 490 today.

IIRC, around $299 at the Cheapo Depot.

Are you doing a popup?

Any stock numbers?

Stock numbers a a little bit different than what miller had on the 500p
The intake shape is the same, square with a triangle on the bottom

Square part is 71* very point is 82*
Ex, 114*
Tr, 125*
Squish .052 with .020 base gasket.

Excuse my ignorance.

Is the 490 akin to the 500 like a 590 is to a 600/620?

Did Carl do a thread on the 500? If so, link?

Yes the 490 is the cheaper version of the 500. But still come factory with a rim setup.

Both miller, and mastermind reported these won't spin much/if any over 13k.

With that in mind I want to get the comp way up, to emphasize the torque that is already present.

Going to clean up the transfer ports, where the filler block blends in 124/5. Raise the ex to 106-7 (about max before it breaks through the port roof)
Square up the intake a bit, still deciding if I want to fill the floor or not.?

Set squish to .018 7* band.
Don't think this piston lends itself to a popup. Tapered band with a slight dome. Plus the offset combustion chamber the popup would have to be very small diameter.

Are we doing and fingers on this jug?

Nah, going to stay somewhat true to its roots. Don't really see where fingers can fit well in this jug.

Unless we can find a suitable carb for this saw, it is pretty limited.

The 590 carb bolts right on....

Backwards. Lol

So don't think that is an option.

Excellent I look forward to watching this build. :)

Send a pic of your carb venturi from choke side. I think there is lots of material that can be dremel out of it.

I've owned both saws. The only real difference is that the clutch cover is a little lighter and the handle is plastic vs coated alum. Also the bar on the 490 is a rebadged oregon pro lite vs the power match on the 500. Everything else appeared to be the same except minor cosmetic changes. Going to follow along and see what you come up with Red.

I'm thinking band and popup on mine. 105/126&127 and a squared intake.

I have to finish a 261/262 on my bench and then it's on.

Now I need to hide the box, lol.
I'm interested to see yours and Red97 outcome. On the intake I did the epoxy, widened it, yada, yada, and I would just leave it stock. But by all means play. I like seeing if someone else gets the same results as I did. :)

Here's my pawn shop 500.
I'm wondering if it started out life as a Home Depot rental saw?
It's clean and runs.
Haven't checked health on it yet.
Gotta be the most restrictive outlet I've seen on a saw!
