Hello everyone, new here and first post.

I bought a saw, an Echo cs501 and set about investigating
the muffler, I took of the deflector and spark screen, behind it
I took out a short piece of pipe that was inserted to the muffler outlet.
I can look inside and see no cat or other obstructions.

In a bid to increase exhaust flow I am wondering has anyone removed this short tube
and what effect it had, and was a retune necessary.

I need advise as to whether I should go for more rpm or leave the saw at 11,400
Until it has some time on it, it’s new so I was afraid to run it lean.

    Thanks for looking

Welcome to OPE. Normally any mods that increase flow, including exhausts, will need some retuning done to the carb.

I would set it to at least 13.5k and see if it 4 strokes good then you can play around with it more and experiment tuning it. The L jet will need retuned as well. Turn it in until it starts sounding lean at idle then back it off 1/4 turn. Make sure it’s up to temp when you tune it. Leave the tube in the trash. Open up the front of the deflector if you haven’t already.

Yeah throw the whole tube thing out for sure. Made a big difference on a echo 490 (real similar to your saw). It was terrible restricted.

This video gives a pretty good explanation about getting the L and Idle set correctly before you start messing with the H.

If you haven't adjusted the carb until now, your screws should be at factory setting, or at least where your dealer set them to when you bought it.

Take opening up to the top screw. That should be sufficient and not too loud.
