My dad's echo 303t has been a little messed up lately. It's been running hot with smoke or steam coming out of the recoil cover and the muffler smokes for about 5 min after it stops. What's the max rpm supposed to be on these ? I've been looking at it for a couple days now and getting more confused by the minute.

You are likely get it warmer than the previous owner and some of that mess in there is getting hot enough to burn the oil that's in it.

Oh my. I think your second pic nailed it. Pull the engine out of the case (not as hard as it seems) and get every bit of that sawdust out of there, your engine is not getting any cooling air from the fan right now and the steam or smoke is probably evaporating oil. You have a big fire hazard going on there too, especially if some fuel find its way down there. My dad lost a nice old Homelite Super XL this way.

If the 303 is like my 3000, it would oil a 32" bar if you could find one with a small Echo mount. Meaning, it grows a shell of oily sawdust like an old Detroit Diesel coats itself in oil and the oily dust will build up inside as you can see. I don't know any way to prevent it other than adjust the oiler to the minimum required and periodically clean out the sawdust. BTW, if your dad ever wants to get rid of the 303 let me know, I wouldn't mind having one.

^^^ What he said and ditch the cat .
I've been looking at that . How does the cat come out ? The muffler looks like it's one piece .

Alot of fire and uncrimp the muffler is how others do it. I have a 341t and I think I'm going to buy an extra muff then try not to tear the other one up to bad fixing it lol.

Might try and get a cs305/3000 muffler. My 305 muffler didn’t have a cat and it looks exactly the same as yours just gray.

This thing was tuned to 13000 rpm too .that sounds way high for the little echos. I was thinking 11500 was where his 303t was at .

Looks like they can be had from $10-20 on eBay the thing I like about the older muffler is it can be taken apart by one screw and then just take the baffle out and it runs much cooler

13000 seems very optimistic for this saw and could very well cause it to run hot. My 3000 is set to 11500 or so and seems quite happy. Another thing, if you leave the cat muffler on it. A catalyst actually needs some extra fuel to work properly and not overheat. This is why a modern EFI engine has O2 sensors before and after the cat, to ensure that the exhaust mixture coming out of the engine is rich enough for the cat to function but not too rich or lean to overheat or clog it. My CS-400, SRM-225, and Dolmar 5105 have cat mufflers and I have tuned them a bit richer than factory. They do not get noticeably hotter than non-cat mufflers and every time I have pulled the mufflers they are clean as can be.
