Ok....completely serious question...as raised on my youtube channel.

How does a dull chain kill a saw?

Doesn't it put less load on the engine? Sure it revs high for long without doing any work...but what is the actual mechanism of failure....

Heat from where? Just from the saw revving?

I would think there would be more actual load on a milling saw vs work saw with a dull chain...no?

With a dull chain the run time on each cut is much longer and typically the operator is leaning on the saw hard to compensate. Dull chains create dust that can be invested (rather than chips) and long cuts create heat buildup.

Heat buildup from the bar that makes the bearing get hot and comprises the crank seal I can see.....

Air filter get plugged maybe. But less air means more fuel...more fuel means more lube.

Hmm

Regardless of the outcome why run a dull chain?

A dull chain kills more saws than anything else, the heat and combined with the extra rpm is murder.

Take a strong ported saw that turns 12.5k+ in the wood with a good chain
How fast do you think it will turn with a dull one? I can guarantee you that a saw turning 13.5 in the wood will not last the day.

Also a dull chain will get you hurt or killed. There's no excuse for it period.

Airfilter being plugged means more fuel?
It makes the saw labor that much more.

Do you run dull chains?
If so these saws im porting are in for a hard and very short life.

It is harder to cut with a dull chain just like it is harder to cut with a dull knife. So the saw slows down as the operator pushes harder, and heat builds from the extra work the saw must do, and before you know it you got a fried piston (exhaust side heat failure).

Slower revolutions due to the dull chain, less cooling form the flywheel.

Dull Chain = more resistance = slower saw/working harder = heat failure.

The load helps keep those rooms down. Screaming wide open is just no good the load helps keep the Saw at an optimal rpm. Even milling the Saw gets loaded . cutting with a dull chain the Saw is screaming its ass off. Not sure if that's theoretically why it's bad but I don't even like holding a Saw wide open very long while tuning it

Holding one wfo tuning it makes my hair stand up.
I don't do it but just a second.
I see guys hold one wfo forever,no load rpm is bad for things.

I also believe that is why it's hard on a Saw with the chain being so dull it doesn't bite and load the machine. It'll also warp bars and so on

A dull chain is hard on any saw but especially a ported one.
I've built and ran saws that others have ported that run 13k in the wood with a good chain and a 8pin,take that saw and put a 7pin or a dull chain or both and you won't have to fight the dull chain long.

I see 660's with the plastic cover around the clutch melted and the worm gear melted from a dull chain.

I seen a 064 that had been hot enough that it burned the oil line off.
