I just picked up a Makita 6421. Whats the general consensus? Im thinking muffler mod and timing advance. Eventually I'm sure it will end up with a 7910 top end, just curious what the best mods are in the meantime.

That's the basics. You could mod the carb as well, that's more involved but if you are up for it, it helps.

Would modding the carb make much difference for the 64cc top end or would that be better to wait for the 79cc top end?

I'm sure it would help a little. My 6421 ran really strong all stock and I was very impressed with it. Cant wait to run it with the ported 7910 top end!

Thats the long term plan, to run it with stock top end for a while until I talk myself into buying a 7910 top end and have that ported. It will be way more saw than necessary but will also be way more fun!

It will help, but you can open jets larger when you port, if you leave it stock internally the basic mods help. You just adjust them to the saw as necessary..

Makes me irritated that my go to claimed a huge price increase and wanted to charge me 260 for a p&c. Think I'm done there.
