Those 788's have a real cult following. A lot of folks would rather have one of those instead of a 700. The .44 and .30-30 versions bring hefty prices. I think Savage intentionally applied some of the 788 styling to the Axis.
Found an old Savage 840 (Same as a 340) in .222. Have to find a scope mount and period scope for that one this year. Barrel in perfect shape. Wonder if it will shoot like the new Savage built guns..
The 788 is a really handy size rifle. I wintered cattle for a ranch back in my 20’s. Feed truck was equipped with a 788 in 22-250. Really a great cartridge for Coyote. The 788 fits in a scabbard with ease while horseback.
The only downfall....that could present a problem....I tell you this for awareness,is the bolt handle is soldered onto the bolt body. I found out the hard way.
