Can you get closer to the cylinder wall, like this?

Are you trying to tell me that is aluminum build up from the piston rather than scratches?

Just trying to get a good look. I can't really tell from the pics so far.

If nothing catches your fingernail/pick, scotch-brite and run it.

Scotch brite is one thing I am out of.
Going to mess around with that old, old bulk head in the pic and see how I want it.
Will work on the cyl. in another shift.
Also going to leak test the saw before tear down.

I think that old cyl is better, but I don't have that piston on hand.

Thanks everyone and thanks Redfin, I'll pay attention to the areas you pointed out.

Put a dab of muriatic acid on the suspect spots. If it bubbles then there's still transfer. You can carefully finish removing it with the acid. Wash it thoroughly afterwards, keep it off anything you don't want a hole chewed in.

Here a pic of missing plating for reference. Appears to me someone used muriatic and didn’t know what they were doing. Don’t leave that chit on long if you do use it.

I could be wrong though. I don’t like using it.

I do have experience with acids just not this way. I'll get some and try, thanks guys.
I worked on it some more late last night, seems I have nothing to lose with the muratic.

How does the muratic react to carbon build up?

Keep the acid on the plating and away from the port edges. It can undermine the plating if you're not careful just like the pic above. There was probably pits that it got into. Baking soda will neutralize it.

The stuff eats concrete.
