Hey Billy welcome to OPE. Some good axe depends on what your exactly looking to do with it. Do you want to fall trees? Split firewood? Cut kindling? Or a combination of all? Will you need to carry it on foot some distance? Many good axes out there by many makers both new & old. You can spend $15-$500..a little more info on intended use will help us get you the 'some good axe' your after.

For good performance at a reasonable price, look at Fiskars.
They make several Axes/hatchets and one will most likely fit the bill for you.
They can be had for around $50.
They don't possess the esthetics of the European stuff, some of which could be considered works of art, but are quite functional and light weight.
I only have an x7 hatchet for chopping but have x25, and x27 splitting axes. All three are well made and perform as advertised.
Fiskars stuff isn't pretty but it's good quality and does what it's designed to do.
Good luck, whatever direction you decide to go.

My Council 5lb Dayton pattern works for splitting small stuff and will bust 1-2" limbs right off a tree easily. It was $50~. I'd love to have a Tuatahi or other premium brand but that one works well for driving wedges and small limbs if I miss one with a saw.

Hard to beat the axes from Husqvarna for hand forged quality at an affordable price.
I agree they are hand forged. The edge comes a little rough but about 30 min of honing and you have a 150 dollar axe. I spent some time on the edge and reshaping the handle a little. Turned out very nice. They have much higher quality steel than the fiskers. I like my fiskers but the steel is soft.

I like the new technology of lighter and faster swing speed. It really works for me.
I don't miss swinging the 8 or 10 pound maul at all. I can swing these new splitting axes all day.
And they work great for me.
