Hi people,

The story is, I've decided to sell to my new neighbour the ms341 which I've lovingly restored and used over the past couple of years :crybaby2:

I obviously need another similar project to take it's place. So what about 036s? Whats the difference between 036, 036av, 036super...? e.g. power, engine specs, cylinder bores etc.

Here's the one I've just seen on ebay:

I can only see 036 on the cover, not 036av, or super etc.

The seller says the saw, has been looked after, but reckons "it doesn't like to start cold with the air filter cover on".

Come on guys, tell me about these saws, in particular the differences between the variants.

they are a good 60cc saw, wont wear you out but you can still cut big wood with authority. if I recall the pull starter had an issue with only having one pawl on it. I think later editions came out with dual pawls. I'm feeling lazy right now but there was also something with the needle bearing you have to watch out for. I think later models went to a larger size.

The first ones had a smaller clutch bearing and drum but you can swap them out to the bigger ones

They're great saws. I'm sure others will come and go from my shelves, but the 036 my dad bought new will be with me forever. It's pretty light and snorty with a 16" bar in hardwood. It'll buck alright with a 20" too if you want. Air filters and AV have improved on modern saws, but the 036 is a very good performing saw and very reliable.

Thanks for quick replies!

A couple more questions, so regards parts (e.g. @dall ) would you happen to know if any 360/361 parts can go on?

(Thanks the confirming the drum + bearing story - i.e. you need to put the larger one on)

Lastly, what about oiling? Is it better than the ms361 which has low oil output as stock?

(My Ms341 was a bit weedy on the oiling......and after reading about the 461R oil pump upgrade on 361 threads, I did that upgrade on mine)

I'm also guessing that as this is an old model of Stihl then there's no chance of the one above being a chinese copy....the reason I ask is since that one above looks mighty clean, e.g. the tank handle does not look particularly weathered.

the 036 has a hose to the bar area and the 361 has a channel in the case to the bar area to oil

In regards to the pic above I don't believe that saw came from the factory as pictured. The decomp cylinder cover isn't correct for the style air cleaner cover. I have some experience with the Chinese cylinders and they do not perform anywhere near the original 036 OEM cylinders. These saws ported are very nice.
