It might work. Remove the outside wire handle, and tape it shut with duct tape. Pack it with newspapers or bubble wrap. Then check it out with the USPS. They will let you know immediately.

I would leave the handle on and drill holes in the lip to run zip ties through to secure the lid. I have shipped saws this way in Rubbermaid tubs several times, the carrier appreciates having a handle

I have had chainsaws shipped to me right in a chainsaw case and also Rubbermade Totes zip tied shut, don`t see why a bucket would be a problem.

I have had a few post masters that they don't like to see duct tape, they said use brown packing tape to cover it.

You may be right on that. Unpacking duct tape is not very easy either. Duct tape is tough stuff.

Yup. A truck differential fits perfect in them also for shipping. the UPS guy usually isn't too happy though.

I prefer blank cardboard or a low value labeled package. Who's going to steal sun flower seeds off your porch except squirrels? It really bugs me when I get a chainsaw shipped in it's own box advertising to mail handlers and porch pirates what I have. Luckily we've had no thieves in the area as far as I know.

Ask for brown box shipping. You can drop a bucket in a box, just sayin'
