Any time I’ve used cabers, I’ve sprayed them with WD40 and wiped clean before assembly. Just an OCD thing.

Generally, I get them out of the wax paper package inside the Meteor piston box. I’m always suprised by what I wipe off of them.

Last night, I used two rings on an 046 that were packaged. What you see on the paper towel is what wiped off of them.

Is this dirt/debris or possibly graphite?

Anyone else with similar experiences?

From a materials science standpoint, even though it's much better than plain cast iron, ductile iron can still corrode. I wonder if it's just some minor surface oxidation left over from the manufacturing process? If you think about it, the rings are completely unfinished, so any moisture in the air could cause some corrosion.

Im sure its a mix of grinding dust and coolant mixed up in the parts. I highly doubt they wash them and dip them before packaging.

It’s probably iron dust from manufacturing that oxidized during transport/storage, possibly also some manufacturing oils on it too
