A friend of mine came over and did a leak down test, and he said it was in bad need of piston rings, so we will give it a shot.

I put oil in the cylinder ,a few squirts with a can, and if it comes up on the compression test its the rings, if the same compression then its a valve.

If it showed 80 psi on a compression gauge, it would at least hit. Stop before you sink a fortune in it, and start over, and respond to some questions.

Fish, I was trying to get this to run for a friend of mine, he came and picked it up Saturday, but I will forward this information to him, and will let you know what happens, thank you for the comments. Ed

My guess, is that your engine just had bad gas/water in it initially, which is why it wouldn't even pop. I am also guessing that the flywheel key was fine when you looked at it, but sheered soon after due to insufficient torque on the flywheel nut or starter clutch, which is a common thing to happen. But being far away on the internet, these are just guesses, which is why I was requesting the pics and info.
I do not think new rings will help whatever this problem is.

I am working on a horizontal engine model 136212, type 0026-01, it has 80 psi compression, has good spark, and a new plug, and it is wet, flywheel key is not sheared, I watched both valves open and close, I spray carb cleaner in the carb and cannot even get a pop, I am baffled and need some guidance, please.. thanks Ed..
are the valves closing all the way?
